Local Support and Funding

A wide variety of funding business support is available. The following table details some of the public sector funding that may be available to companies locating at Roslin BioCentre. This list is by no means definitive, and does not include private sector funding from business angels, venture capitalists and the financial services community.

Proof of Concept Programme Funding for precommercial research 100% of direct attributable project costs Available to all universities, research institutes and the NHS establishments in Scotland
Regional Selective Assistance Capital Investment grant scheme for projects in assisted areas Project dependent (average grant £400k) Available to companies implementing capital investment projects that will safeguard or create jobs. Must be mainly funded by the private sector
SCORE Funding for R&D collaborations Up to 50% max £35k Must involve partnership between a Scottish SME and a public sector research body
Scottish Co-investment Fund Co-investment funding £10-500k Co-investment for SME's
Scottish Executive Health Department Chief Scientist Office Funds Research to improve health services in Scotland up to £150k over 3 years Available to Higher Education Institutions, Health Boards, NHS Trusts, primary care and other appropriate centres
Scottish Executive Environment Group Research Programme Commissions research to support environmental policies Project dependent Open to commercial organisations, academia, government organisations, individuals and charities
Scottish Investment Fund - Under development Support development of funding market by addressing second equity gap £2-5M To be determined
Scottish Proposal Assistance Fund Grant for FP6 application development Up to £15k, 50% of costs Applicant must be a Scottish based SME
SMART R&D funding for small businesses Up to £50k, 70% of all costs Open to individuals planning to start a business and existing small independent firms (<50 employees). Projects must involve a significant technological advance for the UK
SPUR Funding for company R&D to pre-production prototype stage Up to £150k, 35% of costs Open to SME's. Must involve significant technological advance for the UK
SPUR plus Funding for company R&D to pre-production prototype stage Up to £500k, 35% of costs Open to SME's. Projects must involve significant technological advance for the UK and have potential for large worldwide sales. Eligible projects must normally be at least £1M

Connect Networking Organisation Open to Executives within major corporates, leading academics, aspiring entrepreneurs and experienced business service providers
Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) Networking Organisation Exploitation, marketing and Innovation of technology
Medical Devices in Scotland (MDIS) Networking Organisation Open to all legal entities in the medical devices community
Scottish Enterprise Economic Development Agency Supports companies, universities and other research establishments in Scotland. Also support to companies looking to partner or relocate in Scotland
Scottish Enterprise High Growth Start Up Unit Advice and mentoring to improve investment proposition Business must achieve a minimum £5M valuation by the end of it's third year of trading
Scottish Enterprise Life Science Business Advisory Service Mentoring and Business Development support Academic teams with a commercial project and companies located in Scotland
